We have a lot of interest but can’t seem to nail one down to work towards in developing a company around. Here are some interests: baking, clothing, acting, music, community, helping kids. How can we develop a business? any ideas on how to start?

It would be nice if you started a charity, like for unfortunate kids. We use to give a lot of unfortunate kids a party around Christmas and other holidays and give them gifts that they may need, and take them skating or somewhere fun. You also need to ADVERTISE like crazy!! Google some advertising ideas. If you decided to go with a bakery or clothing store or something like that, then a great advertising idea would be like a fashion show, or doing presentations at other people homes. Make flyer, hire salemen, and etc. etc.

There are heaps of things you could do but you have to both be able to work together (even when you argue) and concentrate on just one or two business ideas that you are both interested in. I think the website below has a section on a hundred crafty and easy business starting ideas if I remember correctly.
You need to think of local government regulations, what you will do if one of you pulls out, how you will do your taxes, do you have different skills (one is better at the bookwork etc.) and heaps more stuff.
Anyway check out all the ’starting up a home business’ ideas and advice on the website below and start from there.
Most of all, don’t expect to make money fast, it can take months to get the word around and start making any income at all.
I would suggest reading a book called “The 4 hour Work Week” by Timothy Ferris is an excellent resource for thinking outside the box when it comes to starting a company. While he does give you suggestions, the book is not just a list of business opportunities. Rather, it explains how you can automate the process of starting and running a business. Really good stuff and he has a cool way of writing.

Is your sister blond also? You can think of some really creative business names, no matter what color her hair is, once you two narrow down where you want to start.

First both of you have to sit down and take a decision it has to be something you both love doing if not its not going to work so dont even try it.
