I wouldn’t make things with the intention of selling them to friends and family if I were you. If your friends or family need or want something, you can certainly offer to make it for them, but they’ll expect it cheaper than if they had gone to the store to buy it. Partly because if it’s your first time doing something, it’s not going to be as high of quality as those in stores, and also partly just because they are family, and it’s expected that you are nicer to your family. That means free stuff.
As far as a craft business goes, it should be a business because you are good at making/doing something, and the purpose behind doing it in the first place should not be to make money. You can make money selling plenty of other things besides crafts. You can buy things at wholesale cost and resell them (like what WalMart does), or you can perform a service (like dog walking.)
If you’re interested in crafts in general, take a walk through your local craft store and see what catches your eye. You can try out macrame, beading, basket-making, woodcutting, leather crafts, etc. If you go to groups.yahoo.com and look under Hobbies & Crafts >> Crafts, you will find a lot of different crafts listed, and lots of groups to help you learn how to do each one.
I’ve only really done macrame, which is pretty cheap, and I think it’s fun. But, it’s really a personal preference. Some of my friends who’ve tried it have absolutely no patience for it, while I have no patience for the crafts they do. You’ll be able to search online to see how much the supplies for each type of craft you want to try cost, too.
A good way to get better at whatever craft you’re doing is to give it as gifts for the holidays. That way you get some practice in, and hopefully get good enough at it that other people will be interested in purchasing your stuff. It’ll also let you work kinks out without making paying customers angry or disappointed.
Be careful about this…you don’t want friends/family to feel obligated to buy your items for fear of hurting your feelings. Make things to sell to others or give as gifts for the holidays, birthdays, etc, and if friends or family want to buy, they can.
Go to your local craft store and see what they have…to through craft books, do some research online.
make purses made of old books, its so fun and you will love finding the best book titles, I made one from war and peace for my sister getting married and one called all in the family for my best friend
